Halacha in Depth
Halacha in Depth
Rav Dovid Fink Wednesdays 11:10am-12:15pm (women only)
One of the leading halachic teachers of our time, Rav David Fink draws on a vast store of knowledge to offer us a worldwide social and historical perspective on various topics, based on issues raised by women in the class. Gain a broad and deep understanding of the halachic process and its development, on topics ranging from kashrut to Shabbat, from blessings to medical halacha, from financial issues to prayer, and everything in between. Rav Fink does not simply give over the halacha, but instead reveals the process behind it, thereby empowering us to better understand our own religious choices.
The following topics will be covered in the upcoming Elul and winter semesters:
Kabbala vs. Halacha
The teachings of the Zohar and the great mystics at times conflict with the Talmud and other halachic sources. We will examine the principle rabbinic sources dealing with such conflict and analyse them.
Tzedaka
Charity is a mitsva of immense importance. How much should you give? To whom should you give it? May one give charity to non-Jews or accept charity from them? Is it correct to publicize donors? Is it correct to accept charity in order to learn Torah?
Humane Treatment of Animals
Halacha prohibits Tsaar Baalei Chayyim (causing unnecessary pain to animals). We will examine the principle rabbinic sources dealing with this prohibition and analyse them in terms of contemporary practice.
Alternative Medicine
The Torah commands us to guard our health. We will survey the approaches of the great halachic authorities to alternative medical therapies, analyzing the writings of the great rabbis who approve of and those who reject alternative therapies.
